Product Specific Questions

What are the benefits of installing compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) bulbs replacing incandescent bulbs?

CFLs are a fluorescent bulb designed to emit as much light as traditional light bulbs while using less energy. CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer. CFLs also produce about 75 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut home cooling costs.

What should I do if a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) breaks?

Please review the link below for governmental recommendations on bulb breakage.http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/promotions/change_light/downloads/Fact_Sheet_Mercury.pdf.

What to do when a compact fluorescent light bulb starts to function differently?

All bulbs will reach the end of useful life at some point. The vast majority of CFLs reach the end of useful life and fail passively, some however behave differently than incandescent bulbs. Because of their electronic circuitry CFLs are equipped with a mechanism to prevent overheating when they fail. This mechanism acts like a fuse, and can cause the CFL base to discolor as well as release an unpleasant odor. If this occurs, allow the bulb to cool and then replace it.

What is the difference between Open-cell and Closed-cell Foam Weather-strip?

Open-cell foam weather stripping is soft, i.e. the cell walls, or surfaces of the bubbles, are broken and air fills all of the spaces in the material. This makes the foam soft, resulting in easier compression. Closed-cell foam has varying degrees of hardness, depending on its density. Most of the cells or bubbles in the foam are not broken; they resemble inflated balloons piled together. The cells are full of a special gas, selected to make the insulation value of the foam as high as possible. The advantages of the closed-cell foam compared to open-cell foam include its strength, higher R-value, and greater resistance to the leakage of air or water vapor. The disadvantage of the closed-cell foam is that it is denser, requiring more material, and therefore, more expensive but provides a better R-value. Both types of foam are commonly used in most building applications. For example, you typically would not use open-cell foam below grade where it could absorb water; this would negate its thermal performance because water is a poor insulator compared to air. Closed-cell foam would be a good choice where greatest air sealing and R-value per inch are required.
